“Foreign artists usually make up more than half of our festival programme. That’s why I consider maintaining an international reputation one of the pillars of Signal Festival.”
Says Daniel Burda, one of Signal Festival’s program managers. The international programme of Signal Festival 2024 is made possible thanks to the support of the PPF Foundation. Join us for a look at this year’s international artists and their works!
Who can you look forward to?
Cao Yuxi → Dimensional Sampling
Cao Yuxi creates an association with contemporary society, which similarly tends to worship its idols, but through digital technology. The visual form of the installation is based on the symbol of the QR code, or the unique imprint of a website used to enter the data information space. The developed geometry of the QR code, together with the cube-shaped monolith motif, symbolizes the interface between our parallel worlds. The audiovisual version of the installation in the centre of Old Town Square was created in collaboration with Hong Kong artist Lawrence Lau.
SpY → Orb
The Spanish artist and his studio operating under the SpY label is a large laboratory space with a large team of technical specialists and craftsmen. Contextual art projects are currently among the most original and debated contributions in the field of art in public space.
The ORB installation draws inspiration from the historical Egyptian heritage. The shapes and materials of the object are based on elements of mathematics and symbolism present in classical Egyptian culture, and in particular in the pyramids. Its proportions refer to the number “pi” hidden in their geometry: the result of dividing the pyramid’s circumference by twice its height. The sphere is an invisible part of this geometry, because with a radius equal to the height of the pyramid it would have almost the same circumference.
The surface of the work mirrors its surroundings, the architecture, the sky and the audience in a multiply fragmented reflection. It references the role of the circular mirror in historical Egyptian symbolism, where it was associated with the sun and conveyed ideas of creation and rebirth.
United Visual Artists → Strange Attractions
The exhibition Strange Attractions, realised in collaboration with Signal Festival and Kunsthalle Prague, presents the current work of the legendary British studio UVA.
The exhibition project illuminates the parallels between the unpredictability of chaos theory and the structured patterns that emerge within it. The installation is created in collaboration with Kunsthalle Prague.
Desilence → The Rhythm of the Ocean
This year, the generous space of the facade of the Municipal Library in Prague will serve as a modern large screen for the video mapping of The Rhythm of the Ocean. The visual spectacle is the result of the imagination of the Desilence studio or the creative duo of Tatiana Halbach from Spain and Søren Christensen from Denmark.
The austere neo-classical façade of the Prague library transforms before the eyes of the audience into a wild and unbridled element whose constant movement paradoxically maintains the climatic balance.
