About project

This sculptural intervention into public space recalls an enormous hourglass and offers much food for thought. The oscillating light inside the sculpture creates a dynamic shadow play of everyday objects created by human hands. The cyclic movement of overflowing objects from one side to the other represents one of the fundamental principles of being, from the oscillations of audio strings to the cyclic alternation of night and day, from the circle of life to the very expansion and contraction of the universe.
The measure by which we are able to perceive these phenomena is a fundamental one. None of us experienced the big bang or the hypothesized subsequent expansion of the universe. And yet we observe every day how the movement of the sun demarcates the alternation of day and night and how the course of the moon moves the masses of the ocean, creating the ebb and flow of the tides. We are accustomed to taking these phenomena at face value, because they are an integral part of our system.

Artist

Michal Pustějovský is a graduate of the New Media Studio of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague who has also studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. In his work you can find references to familiar quantum theory concepts as well as traditional artistic techniques. His minimalist creations integrate the latest discoveries of quantum theory with innovations in art history, often bordering on developmental design. Pustějovský has exhibited his work throughout the Czech Republic, Europe, and other continents.
